Viral Marketing for Snap Out Of It NOW!

Sunday, July 26, 2009

I decided that to support Public Television and my pledge special I needed to do my best to spread the word and boost viewing numbers for the KPBS special on August 8th at 7pm.  To do this, I thought a flyer would be good to distribute at the talks I'll be giving over the next few weeks.  Also, I could post the flyer in various public places around town. Actually, my friend who owns the Pannikin Retail Store on Girard in La Jolla triggered the idea for this!

Having just returned to San Diego, I didn't have the resources I had in Nevada and I knew I didn't have much time to get this done.  So I contacted KPBS to ask them for suggestions and after a series of emails I ended up with a terrific company named EyeMotive (contact info below).  I love their work, their efficiency and their professionalism.  And, I love the flyer! What do you think?

Scott is a delight to work with and I highly recommend giving him a call should you need a graphic designer.

Your Brain: the most powerful muscle you have

Friday, July 24, 2009
Are you aware of what a powerful organ your brain is?  Do you know that it runs your entire physiology and determines the course of your life? Your brain is brilliant, efficient, and neutral. It will do its best to support whatever messages are carved into its neuropathways—whether they are positive or negative.

So, here’s the thing—if by repeating certain thoughts you have hard-wired your brain to believe that it's “impossible to make money in an economy like this,” “my industry is going down the tubes,” “we'll be lucky to survive,”. . .well, your brain is going to take the hint and realize that it is impossible to come up with creative solutions or innovative ideas – so it won't!

Now, the good news is that we can consciously re-wire our brains so that our conditioned beliefs and attitudes support us, embrace positive change, help us feel empowered in challenging times.  And when we feel empowered? We come up with brilliant ideas, effective strategies, innovative solutions.

So, ... how do we get there?

Energy Psychology

Wednesday, July 22, 2009
From distracted frenzy to focused relaxation!

I want to share something that I experienced today that was very exciting and had a particularly grounding effect on me.  I met with my friend and colleague, Dr. George Pratt, at his private practice office in La Jolla, CA (on the Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla Campus).  George, knowing that I just moved my home and office from Reno, NV to Del Mar, CA, suggested that I might benefit from a few energy techniques that he writes about in his book, "Instant Emotional Healing."   I eagerly accepted his offer and we spent the next 20 minutes doing some deep breathing, some unique movements with my hands, and some muscle testing.  I came into his office feeling pressured and tense due to the hectic schedule triggered by my desire to get settled "FAST," -- and I left feeling confidant, focused and relaxed.  Not surprisingly, I moved through my day feeling focused and filled with a sense of calm.

I want to recommend George's book to you if you are feeling overwhelmed, stressed, anxious or doubtful, fearful, and not living to your fullest potential -- or maybe your experiencing a transition that is setting off feelings of frustration and irritability.   Pick up a copy and let me know what you think!

Awareness Test

Tuesday, July 21, 2009
I’m preparing for a keynote I’ll be giving next week at a business luncheon in La Jolla and thought you all might enjoy this little awareness test.
In my talks I show the audience some of the ways our brain works and how it – not circumstance -- controls our outcomes. Many of you have been doing all you can think of to keep your businesses going, increase income, encourage your employees and/or families, etc. But even if you are "doing all the right things," you may not be getting results. Let me show you why.
Here's a video about perception and awareness:

How many of you saw the moon-walking bear the first time through?

So how does that relate to us right now? If you’re conditioned to focus on how bad the economy is, how many businesses have closed in your industry, how many other people have lost money…well, that's what you are going to see. Your brain will not let you see the moon-walking bear or that unusual opportunity or that potential opening in your field. But if you re-wire your brain, your internal authority to start looking for the moon-walking bear, your brain will let you see it.
You can consciously re-wire your brain so that your conditioned beliefs and attitudes support you, embrace positive change, help you feel empowered in challenging times.  And when we feel empowered? We come up with brilliant ideas, effective strategies, innovative solutions.
So how do we get there?   There are four basic steps to the process -- you can read about them and start the process with getting, “Back in Charge!

Dr Adrianne Ahern Office Photosynth

Check out my new office -- click "play" on the image above and it will let you cruise around my office.  You can even zoom in to check out the books I read and the artwork on the wall.  Last week a few members of my web team, Darin and Lisa McClure, came to see my psychology private practice office.  In addition to teaching me a bunch of new tricks with my Twitter and Facebook accounts, they also took a bunch of photos of my new office.  Then using this cool new tool (for me!) called "Microsoft Photosynth" they showed me how to embed the link to all the photos right here into my blog.  So, you can check out my office - all the books, water fountain, my diplomas, etc..., and rather than imagine what it would be like to sit down with me, you can check it out for yourself before even picking up the phone to call for an appointment.

Check it out!

The office is centrally located in Carmel Valley next to the Ruth Chris SteakHouse, right off the 5 freeway and just south of the 56 freeway.

NEW office address is:
11622 El Camino Real, Suite 100,

San Diego, CA 92130

The Power of Imagination

Sunday, July 19, 2009
To carve a new neuropathway into your brain, a  new thought pattern that will serve you and your purpose, you’ll want to use your imagination.
Here’s the important point to remember: your brain can't tell the difference between an experience that actually happens and one that is imagined.
So, the brain will be as responsive to a good visualization as it is to something that actually happens. For instance, when athletes visualize a race or a golf round or an event to train for peak performance, their physiological response is measurable and looks just like it does when they are actually performing. The brain sends out the very same signals to the body's systems as it would in the "real life" situation.
Now, when we were kids most of us were pretty good imaginers. We would pretend to be heroes or mommies or world-famous musicians. And when we pretended, we got all of our senses involved: we walked like a pirate and felt brave and fearless. We could smell the briny sea and hear the ocean waves, right? This is the kind of imagining or visualization that your brain will respond to.
So, when carving a new neuropathway into your brain, you’ll want to get all your senses involved and use the power of your imagination to create the reality you want!

The Perfect Gift

Saturday, July 18, 2009
I love this Buckminster Fuller quote, as I feel it speaks to the need for each one of us to accept ourselves fully and ask the question, "How can I best be in service to life itself?"

"Everyone has the perfect gift to give the world - and if each of us is freed up to give the gift that is uniquely ours to give, the world will be in total harmony."

I am always asking myself, "How can I best be in service to others, life, and to my unique purpose?"
I am and will always be a practitioner -- receiving joy from working with the individual in achieving their highest potential -- however, working one-on-one reaches only a small amount of people. Therefore, I am grateful for the opportunity to have written, "Back in Charge!:  A guide to harnessing the power of your brain to create the life you'll love."  Some of you may know exactly what your gift is and how you want to offer it to the world; others of you who may not be so clear--your conditioning may be getting in your way of discovering your unique gift.  For you, I encourage you to pick up a copy of "Back in Charge!" and bring your conditioning into alignment with what you really want!

Career in Crisis?

Friday, July 17, 2009

Our work life is the source of much of the satisfaction or dissatisfaction within our lives. It not only provides the income for our basic needs but also shapes what is possible in the rest of our life. It is an arena that can challenge our minds and test our relationship skills. It is usually one of the main ways we define who we are. And when we want to, or are forced to, make a change, it can be wrenching. But there are ways to make such a transition smooth and positive.

Listen to my radio interview this morning on "The Career Clinic talk show" which airs Saturdays at noon Central on WZFG, AM 1100 The Flag, in Fargo.  You can link to live audio of the show at www.am1100.tv.

Perception not circumstance: Solving the unsolvable

If your brain is convinced that your situation, whatever it is, is nearly impossible to solve, how do you think it is approaching it? But, if your brain believed that solutions would come easily and that it was fully capable of finding them, how does it respond?

Let me share with you a true story from my book, "Back in Charge!," about a graduate level mathematics student at UC Berkeley in 1939, George Dantzig.  George showed up late for class one day and found two problems on the blackboard which he believed to be homework assignments. He copied the problems and took them home. George struggled to find solutions to these problems but, knowing he was as capable as any other student in the class, he worked diligently until he solved both of them two days later. Six weeks after turning them in, George was contacted by his very excited professor, Dr. Jerzy Newman. The two problems had not been homework assignments at all. Dr Newman had written them on the board to show the class two of the most famous unsolved problems in statistics.

Yet George had been able to solve these problems. Why? Probably because he, and his brain, believed he could. Could the other students in the class have solved them as well? Perhaps. But all of the other students in class knew that the problems had never been solved. Their brains perceived a situation that was unknown and probably impossible; George's brain perceived a situation that was difficult but doable. It was not the circumstance, but the perception of the circumstance that made the difference.   Let me make this clear – – George perceived the circumstance to be mere homework. But they were exactly the same problems that other students perceived to be unsolvable!  When the brain is told something is unsolvable, impossible or very difficult, it approaches it as unsolvable, impossible or very difficult.

The Internal Authority that Runs Your Life!

Thursday, July 16, 2009
It doesn’t matter whether the direction or information your brain is given is TRUE or FALSE: your brain is totally obedient and activates all of your physical systems –your visual perception, your heart rate, your glands, your hearing, your emotions -- to act according to that direction or belief.

Your brain responds to external direction, but more importantly, your brain responds to your internal direction or beliefs. This internal authority will always over-ride the external. So for instance, if I tell you a puzzle is impossible, but your internal authority says, "Hey, I'm terrific at puzzles. I'll ace these!" that's the direction that your brain will follow. If I tell you that the puzzles are easy but your internal authority says that you are hopeless at puzzles, your brain will still respond as if they are difficult. This internal authoritythese internal beliefs, whether you are aware of them or not, and whether they are true or not, run your life. These are your internal conditioned beliefs or your conditioning. It's this conditioning, this internal authority, that you need to re-wire in order to create the life you'll love!

Now, some of our conditioning is appropriate for certain times but destructive in others. Think about an automatic sprinkler system. It works great when all the settings are right. It just does its thing without your attention. But what if its settings are for winter: no water, 7 days a week? Great, during winter. Maybe even okay for spring. But once it hits summer, your sprinkler's settings are no longer so great. Unless you can re-set your sprinkler to deal with its new circumstance, your lawn is lost!

The conditioned beliefs you have had about career and finances may have been fine for normal economic times. "I'm not smart enough to start my own business" was okay back then. "This is the only career I'll ever be good at." Or "My broker will watch out for my interests" or "I could never live in a house with roommates" was okay back then. But circumstances have changed -- dramatically. It's summer. You may need to change your conditioned settings.

The good news is that we can consciously condition our brains to operate in directions we choose – to change its settings now that it’s summer.

If this makes sense to you check out my new book “Back in Charge!”

Find the Opportunity!

Wednesday, July 15, 2009
While doing some research for a talk I'll be giving at SeaHorse Capital at the end of this month, I came across some notes from previous talks that I thought you might find interesting -- about finding opportunity within periods of transition and crisis.

When John F. Kennedy claimed that the Chinese symbol for crisis also meant opportunity, he wasn't exactly accurate. But the concept he was describing is true. Within every seeming crisis, there is an opening, the possibility of something better to emerge. Open your eyes and your mind to give yourself the chance to see that opportunity for yourself.

Actor Harrison Ford once noted, "We all have big changes in our lives that are more or less a second chance. "

How Does Your Brain Work?

Are you aware that your brain, not circumstance, controls your outcomes? I know many of you are doing all you can think of to find work, increase income, deal with your finances, etc. But even if you are "doing all the right things," you may not be getting results.

Why?

If you’re focusing on how bad the economy is, how many people have been laid off in your industry, how many other people have lost money…well, that's  exactly what you are going to see. Your brain will not let you see that unusual opportunity or that potential opening in your field.

Some of you are walking around knowing that the sky is going to fall and you'll be lucky to survive at all. Others are seeing this time as an opportunity to change business as usual and create a more positive world.

Here’s the thing:  your brain doesn't care which is right, but it’s directing your emotions, heart rate, breathing – all of your systems – to prepare for a future event (whether it’s filled with positivity and inspiration or doom and gloom) that it believes will happen.

Stay tuned for my next post – “The Internal Authority that Runs Your Life!”
